Ingredients
Scale
Apple Dumplings
- 2 Granny Smith apples
- 2 (8 ounce) cans crescent rolls
Sauce and Topping
- 1 cup butter, melted
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Cinnamon, to taste
- 1 (12 ounce) can Mountain Dew soda (or Sprite)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray two 9×13 inch baking dishes with cooking spray to ensure the dumplings don’t stick.
- Prepare Apples: Peel and core the Granny Smith apples. Cut each apple into 8 slices, creating uniform-sized wedges perfect for wrapping.
- Wrap the Apples: Take each apple slice and roll it inside a crescent roll triangle, fully enclosing the apple slice. Place each wrapped apple slice neatly in the prepared baking dishes.
- Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, sugar, and vanilla extract thoroughly. This mixture will coat the dumplings and create a sweet glaze.
- Add Sauce and Soda: Pour the butter-sugar-vanilla mixture evenly over the arranged apple dumplings. Then, pour the Mountain Dew (or Sprite) around the edges of the pans – this soda will enhance the sauce, creating a bubbly, caramelized flavor.
- Sprinkle Cinnamon: Lightly sprinkle cinnamon over the top of the dumplings according to your taste preference for warm spice.
- Bake: Place the baking dishes in the oven and bake at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes or until the crescent rolls are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling.
- Serve: Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, spooning extra sauce over the dumplings for maximum indulgence.
Notes
- Using Granny Smith apples is preferred for their tartness which balances the sweetness of the sauce.
- Mountain Dew adds a unique citrusy sweetness and helps create a bubbly glaze; Sprite can be used as a substitute.
- For best results, ensure the crescent rolls fully wrap the apple slices to prevent leaking during baking.
- Serve immediately for the best texture; leftovers can be reheated but the pastry may become softer.
- Try adding nuts like chopped pecans or walnuts in the sauce for added crunch.
