Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 12-14 cups French bread, cut into cubes
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups 2% milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
Fruit Topping
- 1 cup strawberries, sliced
- 1/2 cup blueberries
For Serving
- 1-2 tbsp powdered sugar
- Maple syrup, as desired
Instructions
- Prepare the Casserole Dish: Grease a 9″x13″ casserole dish with vegetable oil or butter to ensure the French toast doesn’t stick during baking.
- Assemble Bread Cubes: Cut the French bread into cubes and fill the casserole dish about three-quarters full.
- Mix Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, 2% milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and brown sugar until well combined and smooth.
- Soak Bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes in the casserole dish to allow the bread to absorb the flavors.
- Add Fruit: Slice the strawberries and scatter them along with the blueberries evenly over the soaked bread.
- Chill: Cover the casserole tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least four hours, or overnight, so the bread thoroughly absorbs the custard.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap and bake the casserole for 35 to 50 minutes, checking at 35 minutes for doneness. The casserole should be puffed and golden brown.
- Finish: Once baked, sprinkle powdered sugar over the top for a sweet finish.
- Serve: Cut into servings, drizzle with maple syrup to taste, and enjoy warm.
Notes
- Using day-old French bread helps it absorb the custard better without becoming too soggy.
- Fruit can be varied based on seasonality; raspberries or blackberries also work well.
- Make ahead by preparing the casserole the night before and refrigerating to save time in the morning.
- If you prefer a crispier top, bake uncovered for the last 10 minutes.
- Maple syrup amounts can be adjusted or replaced with honey for variation.
