Description

Deliciously soft and fluffy Garlic Butter Dinner Rolls made from scratch with a tender crumb and a flavorful garlic parsley butter glaze. Perfect for dinner or as a side, these rolls are easy to prepare with simple ingredients and baking techniques.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 220ml / 1 cup warm milk, whole or skimmed
  • 1½ tsp sugar
  • 7g / 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 400g / 3 cups bread flour or all purpose flour

Finishing Ingredients

  • 1 egg, beaten (for brushing)
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 clove garlic, pressed or minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk, active dry yeast, and sugar. Let it stand for 5 minutes until the yeast blooms and appears frothy, signaling that it is active.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: Add vegetable oil, salt, and one large egg to the yeast mixture. Mix well using a fork to combine all wet ingredients thoroughly.
  3. Form Dough: Pour the liquid mixture into the flour. Mix until a rough dough forms. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead by hand for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook: knead on low speed for 1 minute, then on medium for 4 more minutes.
  4. First Rise: Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough inside, cover with plastic wrap and a towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours until the dough triples in size.
  5. Prepare for Second Rise: Punch down the dough gently and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide into 16 equal portions (weigh if necessary). Roll each piece into a smooth ball and place them spaced 1 inch apart in a well-buttered 9×13 inch baking pan.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the dough balls with a tea towel and allow them to rise for another 30 minutes, until puffy.
  7. Preheat Oven and Prepare Egg Wash: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Brush the tops of the rolls with beaten egg for a golden glaze.
  8. Bake Rolls: Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  9. Prepare Garlic Butter: While rolls bake, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and mix in the pressed garlic and freshly chopped parsley to create a flavorful garlic butter.
  10. Brush with Garlic Butter: Once the rolls are out of the oven, immediately brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture to infuse them with savory flavor and soften the crust.

Notes

  • Ensure all ingredients are measured accurately for best results.
  • Using a stand mixer with a dough hook speeds up kneading, but the dough is soft and easy to knead by hand as well.
  • The dough should be soft and not sticky after kneading; adjust flour or kneading time as necessary.
  • Proofing time depends on room temperature; watch for the dough to triple in size rather than relying only on time.
  • Bread flour yields the best texture, but all purpose or whole wheat flour can be substituted as preferred.
  • Brush with garlic butter immediately after baking for maximum flavor and a soft, shiny crust.
