This crowd-pleasing meal is layered and baked to perfection, perfect for a comforting family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Pasta

  • 1 lb. angel hair pasta or spaghetti

Meat Sauce

  • 1/2 lb. ground beef 80/20
  • 1/2 lb. hot Italian sausage (mild works too)
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
  • 10 garlic cloves, minced divided
  • 32 oz. marinara sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste

Alfredo Sauce

  • 1 stick butter (8 tablespoons), divided
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups parmesan cheese, freshly grated
  • 3 tbsp cream cheese, softened
  • Salt, red pepper flakes, and freshly cracked pepper, to taste

Cheese Topping

  • 2/3 cup mozzarella cheese
  • 2/3 cup fontina cheese, shredded
  • 2/3 cup provolone cheese, shredded

Garnish

  • Parsley for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the assembled spaghetti.
  2. Make the Alfredo Sauce: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt 6 tablespoons of butter. Add half of the minced garlic and stir until fragrant. Pour in the heavy cream and bring it to a low boil, then reduce heat and simmer about 5 minutes to thicken. Add parmesan cheese and cream cheese, whisking until melted and sauce thickens. Season with salt, red pepper flakes, and freshly cracked pepper to taste.
  3. Cook Pasta: Add the pasta to the boiling salted water and cook until al dente. Drain the pasta and return it to the pot. Pour in the Alfredo sauce and toss until pasta is evenly coated. Clean out the skillet for the meat sauce.
  4. Brown the Meat: In the cleaned skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking it up as it cooks. After about 2 minutes, add diced onions, green bell peppers, and the remaining minced garlic. Sauté while the meat finishes cooking.
  5. Add Sauce to Meat: Pour in the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir well so the sauce is evenly combined with the meat and vegetables.
  6. Assemble the Dish: Grease a large cast iron skillet or 9×13 casserole dish. Spread the Alfredo-coated spaghetti evenly in the dish. Pour the marinara meat sauce over the top, spreading it out with a spatula.
  7. Add Cheese Topping: Layer the shredded mozzarella, fontina, and provolone cheeses evenly over the top of the meat sauce covered pasta.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until bubbly and heated through. Optionally, broil for an additional 5 minutes to achieve a golden, crispy cheese top.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven, sprinkle with fresh parsley, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Note: To prevent sauce from bubbling over and spilling in your oven, place a baking sheet lined with foil on the rack underneath your baking dish.
  • The recipe uses a mix of cheeses for depth of flavor—feel free to substitute similar melting cheeses if needed.
  • For easier prepping, use pre-minced garlic if you prefer.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
