Description

Sausage Cheese Butter Swim Biscuits are hearty, cheesy breakfast biscuits with flavorful sausage, melted cheddar, and buttery richness. Perfect for breakfast or brunch, these tender, golden-brown biscuits are baked in a buttery skillet, creating a deliciously savory dish with crispy edges and a moist center.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 3/4 - 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F and spray a 9×9-inch glass or ceramic baking dish with nonstick spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Sausage: Cook the breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it apart with a spatula, until no pink remains, about 8-10 minutes. Drain on paper towels to remove excess grease.
  3. Prepare Batter: In a medium bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and baking powder. Add the buttermilk and stir until a sticky batter forms, adding more buttermilk if needed for desired consistency. Gently fold in the shredded cheddar cheese and cooked sausage mixture.
  4. Layer in Dish: Pour the melted butter into the prepared baking dish. Spread the biscuit dough evenly on top of the butter. Use a knife or spatula to cut the dough into 9 squares without separating them completely.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the oven on the middle rack and bake for 25-30 minutes. Rotate once during baking for even browning. Cover with foil if the biscuits start to brown too quickly. Bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add chopped jalapeños or red pepper flakes into the batter.
  • Using chilled buttermilk helps maintain the batter’s consistency.
  • These biscuits are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
  • Ensure you cook the sausage thoroughly to avoid any food safety issues.
