Description

These Irresistible Valentines Cream Cheese Mints are a delightful homemade candy perfect for gifting or enjoying during the holiday season. Soft, melt-in-your-mouth mints flavored with your choice of extracts and tinted in pastel colors, they combine cream cheese and butter with confectioners’ sugar to create a smooth, sweet treat that sets beautifully without baking.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 1 package cream cheese (8 oz, softened to room temperature for easier mixing)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened at room temperature)
  • 4 to 5 cups confectioners’ sugar

Flavoring and Coloring

  • 1 teaspoon preferred flavor extract (peppermint, vanilla, lemon, cherry, raspberry, or strawberry)
  • Food coloring (optional, to achieve desired pastel shades)

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter and Cream Cheese: In a medium saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of unsalted butter over medium heat until fully liquefied. Add 8 oz of softened cream cheese and stir continuously until the cream cheese softens completely and blends smoothly with the melted butter.
  2. Mix in Powdered Sugar: Remove the pan from heat. Gradually add 4 cups of confectioners’ sugar to the butter and cream cheese mixture, stirring thoroughly as you add. If the dough remains sticky, add more powdered sugar a little at a time until the texture resembles a very soft playdough that doesn’t stick to your fingers.
  3. Flavor and Color the Dough: Divide the dough into portions based on how many different flavors or colors you want. To each portion, add about 1/3 teaspoon of your chosen flavor extract and mix well. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring and knead until the color is evenly distributed.
  4. Shape the Candies: For classic butter mint circles, scoop about 1/2 teaspoon portions, roll them into balls, then flatten slightly with the back of a fork to create a scored pattern. Alternatively, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness and use cookie cutters to cut shapes. To prevent sticking, spray cutters lightly with non-stick spray or dip them in melted butter and then granulated sugar between cuts.
  5. Coat and Set the Mints: Optionally, roll shaped candies in granulated sugar to coat all sides lightly. Arrange the mints in a single layer on waxed paper and let them sit for a few hours, until firm on the outside and no longer sticky. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for freshness.

Notes

  • Make sure the cream cheese and butter are softened to room temperature to ensure smooth mixing.
  • Adjust the amount of confectioners’ sugar to reach the right dough consistency—should be soft but not sticky.
  • Flavor extracts can be varied to suit your taste and holiday themes.
  • For vibrant colors, use gel food coloring as liquid colors may affect the dough consistency.
  • Store mints in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep them fresh and soft inside.
